A woman named Amanda Zilliken is organizing a “Nurse In” at her church in North Carolina called Elevation. Elevation is a mega-church with a popular online presence and as the word “mega” implies, it’s pretty huge. That’s why Zilliken was shocked that she was directed to a toilet stall last Sunday when she had to nurse her child. Not only was she upset to be interrupted while at Sunday service, the facilities were hardly what one might expect of such a big organization:

Zilliken told People that she was nursing her baby under a cover during the sermon when a volunteer shone a light on her and made her get up and take the baby to the bathroom.

“It embarrassed me, and drew people’s attention,” Zilliken said. “To take me to the mother’s restroom was totally unacceptable, humiliating — and illegal.”

She’s right. In North Carolina a woman can legally breastfeed her baby while covered or uncovered. Zilliken alleges that the response from Elevation officials has been basically non-existent.

Her post about her experience has attracted the attention of other breastfeeding mothers, and they plan to show up to Elevation this Sunday and nurse their children out in the open together in protest of the church’s treatment.

“That is what God made my body to do,” Zilliken told WCNC. “We should not have to be ashamed of doing something that’s good for our children.”

There are always people online who disagree with that simple statement about normal bodily functions:

But plenty of people are on Zilliken’s side. Maybe church officials need to get off the pulpit and walk amongst the people for a Sunday. The next generation is literally depending on it.
