He proposed to his longtime partner in front of 75,000 people in April.

And WWE legend John Cena has opened up about what made him so nervous to propose to Nikki Bella – and it wasn’t a fear of rejection or stage fright.

The 40-year-old told Yahoo Be this week he had been afraid of a ‘negative reaction’ from the crowd who might not like his idea.

John proposed to Nikki, 34, after they had defeated The Miz and Maryse  at Wrestlemania 33 in April.

Speaking to Yahoo Be, John explained he had been racked with nerves over what the crowd’s reaction would be.

‘The WWE audience as you know sometimes can be a little excited both positively and negatively,’ he said.

‘I was worried about that the audience would have a negative reaction to what I did.’

But fortunately for John, the crowd erupted in loud cheers and clapping as a tearful Nikki accepted his proposal.

‘If you go back and you watch that match the one before the proposal they didn’t necessarily like me that much and then when they found out I was making one of the boldest moves of my entire life, 75,000 folks showed respect,’ John said.

John, who has been in Australia this week promoting his new film Ferdinand, told the Kyle and Jackie O Show in June that was prepared to ‘go down in flames’ if Nikki had said no.

‘We’ve been together for about four and a half years and I figured at that point if I was to go down in flames, I would go down swinging!’ he replied.

‘It was meant to be that way and I couldn’t think of a better place to do it,’ the wrestler added.

John divorced his first wife, Elizabeth Huberdeau, in 2012.
